MONS CLAUDIANUS (Wadi umm Hussayn) and MONS PORPHYRITES (Jebel Abu Dukhaan)
The romans scoured their empire for the finest stone, finding the best porphyry on Mons Porphyrites and the finest granodiorite at Mons Claudianus both in Khushmaan territory. These sites are close to the Red Sea. Lacking a Suez Canal, however, the Roman chose to drag their stones up to 140 mils (225 km) for up to eight days across the Eastern Desert to ship on the Nile. Rome’s Pantheon and Forum of Trajan, Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia and Burnt Pillar and Baalbeck’s Temple of the sun are among the final repositories of this prized rock.
